In Woodbridge, a homeowner had a foundation for outdoor living but found the footprint restrictive; their goal was to move beyond a simple platform to create a multi-tiered environment where relaxation and entertainment coexist. They needed a design that flowed naturally from the back door to the lawn, providing dedicated areas for every mood.
Objectives focused on expanding usable square footage while integrating stone features with modern composite decking to provide a permanent, low-maintenance solution.
The Custom Design Process
The work required complex coordination between masonry and carpentry. Crews clearing the area set the foundation for a sprawling lower-level patio using EP Henry Bristol Smooth pavers in a Tucson finish.
To manage the yard grade and provide built-in seating, we integrated retaining and seating walls crafted from Coventry stone in a Dakota Blend. Vertical highlights included custom-built outdoor living features and a fire pit area. Simultaneously, the upper elevation was redefined with a custom deck and integrated stairs.
To keep the look polished and durable, we installed Trex Transcend railing, selected for its high-performance finish and classic profile. Every element was carefully tensioned to provide a cohesive transition between stone and wood elevations.
A Cohesive Backyard Solution
A sophisticated landscape that meets every homeowner’s requirements was accomplished by adding a fire pit area. The yard now serves as a multifunctional destination, even during cooler Virginia evenings, thanks to the contrast between smooth Bristol pavers and textured stone walls.
This project successfully converted a small, underutilized space into a grand, multi-level room under the sky that honors the home’s architecture while providing luxury that was previously missing.
